Carve a Disney Pumpkin

As I’ve always said I’m not a very crafty person. When it comes to fall activities I’d far rather focus on the eating: candy/caramel apples, apple pie, pumpkin pie, apple cider, and more. Give me the guts left over from a pumpkin carving session, I’ll roast up the seeds and put them in cranberry sauce, or apply the pumpkin innards to a pie or a chocolate chip pumpkin cake. For the more artistic types, however, or at least for those who enjoy crafts more than I do, this month/season gives the once-a-year opportunity for one unique craft: pumpkin carving. Those … Continue reading

Free Halloween Masks and Costumes

A couple of weeks ago, my family and I were in our local Target store. All of the Halloween costumes and things were already out on display, even though it was still September. No matter, I know that these things go quickly. While my husband and the rest of the kids were looking at the trail mix, I chased after our youngest, who was excited by all of the different colorful costumes. He spotted one that “he waited his whole life for,” a rocket costume. I admit that he certainly looked cute in it when he tried it on. I … Continue reading

April Fool’s Day Fun

April Fool’s Day is tomorrow, do you have your pranks ready? Do you do anything special on April Fool’s Day or just treat it like a normal day? To be honest, I rarely observe the day. It may be a fun day for kids but an entire day of my son playing pranks on his little sisters does not give me the warm fuzzies or the giggles. It is more likely my little ones will cry so a fun day will be ruined as all will have to find a comfy corner to rethink their actions. My oldest finds no … Continue reading

Single Parents and Birthday Party Budgeting

Having a birthday party can take a chunk out of your wallet. Having more than a couple of kids to give a party for can lead us to the poorhouse if we are not careful. This is true for parents everywhere, but a single parent or families with one income can feel the pinch that much worse. With the faltering economy being what it is most of us are leery about spending money unnecessarily. Just about every kid’s place in town now offers to “host” your child’s birthday party. This is great because that leaves the parents with one very … Continue reading

Turkey Day is almost here. Hopefully you have your plans all made for Thanksgiving and the Thanksgiving meal. How about the decorations? Here are some ideas for decorating, as well as links to some free printable decorations. If you have rubber stamps, you can make some great napkin holders. Just stamp out a “thanks” message, a general design or even a turkey on to a piece of colored paper. Cut the paper into a strip, wrap it around a rolled napkin and tape in the back. Pumpkin Carving Templates

Now that Halloween is this week, I may break down and let the kids carve their pumpkins. We have three small pumpkins for the kids to decorate individually, as well as one larger one for the family to do together. The kids have been begging us to turn them into jack-o-lanterns. For the smaller ones, we have a bucket of plastic pieces that can be pushed into the pumpkins to make creatures. This is a take on the Mr. Potato Head toy. But they still would like to actually carve. Since neither my husband nor myself are very artistically talented … Continue reading

Getting Out of Debt

For many years, the leaders of the Church have counseled us to avoid debt and to pay the debts we have. President J. Rueben Clark, Jr. said, “Interest never sleeps nor sickens nor dies; it never goes to the hospital; it works on Sundays and holidays; it never takes a vacation. … Once in debt, interest is your companion every minute of the day and night; you cannot shun it or slip away from it; you cannot dismiss it; it yields neither to entreaties, demands, or orders; and whenever you get in its way or cross its course or fail … Continue reading

Disney Online’s Family Fun Weekender

Disney online has been big news lately. They’ve been putting a good deal of work and creativity into their website and it shows. Did you know they have newsletters now? I’m not talking about just any old newsletter either. Every week, I receive via email the Family Fun Weekender and I just love it! FamilyFun.com is a new addition to the Disney family of websites and is associated with the print version of Disney’s Family Fun Magazine. You can subscribe to the print magazine for only $1 per issue, which is a great deal, but an even better deal is … Continue reading

Manly Food for Father’s Day

This is not a post on recipes that you can cook for Father’s Day. Rather, this is a ‘discussion’ of my attempt to find the perfect meal for my husband for Father’s Day. In general my kids do the planning of Father’s and Mother’s Day meals. This often involves various forms of chicken nuggets, fries, pancakes or fish sticks. But this year I decided that I was going to step it up a notch. I was going to make a full course meal, (with the help of the kids of course) for my husband for Father’s Day. Of course if … Continue reading
