We have been wanting to explore keeping chickens (click here for an interview with the chicken lady) for a while. It is a project that would be educational, and provide us with some fresh eggs. Our environment is perfect for it. We live on two semi-rural acres and would have plenty of space for a coop. Many of our friends already have chickens. It has been a trend in this area for a number of years. They are happy to answer all of questions about raising chickens, what works or doesn’t work, how to keep the foxes out of the … Continue reading →
Yesterday was the first day that it actually felt like spring here in Pennsylvania. The daffodils actually bloomed, and we could walk around without our heavy coats and sweatshirts and sweaters. I parked the car in the driveway, in the sun, and got it cleaned out while my youngest and I waited for the kindergarten bus. All very nice, but the biggest development came later. After work, my husband started planning out a garden. Planning out a garden is something that he and I have been talking about for a while. Growing some of our own produce is a great … Continue reading →
Saturday was a great day. It was productive, yes, but that was not the thing that will make it stand out in my mind as a great day. What made Saturday so great is that I was able to do a couple of things with the boys that we don’t usually get to do. Most days, we have a fun time at home, especially now that we are able to be out in the yard. On Saturday, I combined the business of going out to do errands with the opportunity to bring Dylan to a special event and also to spend some time … Continue reading →
Kids inside and bored and the weather just isn’t co-operating during spring break? I know what you mean. Although I’ve been trying to push the birdies out of the nest to play outside, it is just too cold here. Add to that the fact that our spring break is really short this year (only three days off), and you have the potential makings of disappointed kids. Sure, we could just throw money at the problem, but then again, that wouldn’t be very frugal. Despite these challenges, I am happy to report that the feedback I got from my kids at … Continue reading →

The beginning of the month means that there are brand new coupons for frugal families to collect, clip, and hand to the cashier. Coupons.com sends me a helpful reminder email to let me know that now is a great time to go browse through their new coupons. Which ones will you be using? For the past few days, I have been suffering from allergies. The pollen count is high, and I am sick. As always, Coupons.com sends out email that has a photo with a cute saying. This time, the image is of a row of purple flowers that are … Continue reading →
The other day, I read that the government was going to drop dead mice from helicopters over Guam. It sounded crazy, but there was a good reason. Officials are using the mice to get rid of an estimated two million brown tree snakes. The snakes have overtaken the territory, causing damage to both the economy and environment. The snakes have almost depleted Guam’s native bird species. This lack of birds causes a frightening (at least to me) side effect – the island now has 40 times more spiders than surrounding islands. Needless to say, all the spiders and snakes have … Continue reading →
