Honey Boohoohoo!

Hoohoohoo… Hear that? The sobs, wails and groans are a result of watching less than five minutes of TLC’s train wreck of a reality TV series, “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.” And by train wreck, I mean hit show, ratings Goliath, and sad reflection of society’s taste in entertainment. Millions of viewers tune in each week to mock the parenting skills–or lack thereof–displayed on the show which stars 7-year-old Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson and her eclectic family: *June “Mama” Shannon, the 32-year-old mother of Honey Boo Boo and her three sisters. She’s also the GRANDMOTHER of baby Kaitlyn. Did … Continue reading

Pop Culture Round Up – January 31, 2011

We have almost made it through the first month of the year and so how much has happened. Charlie Sheen is in rehab, but David Arquette just came out, of rehab that is. And Lindsay Lohan – where is she? As it stands right now, Lindsay is both out of rehab and jail for right now. However, she has another court hearing on February 25th, so anything can happen. But, you may be glad to know that TMZ is reporting that Lindsay is glad Charlie has gone to rehab because she is worried about him. Worried about him? Wow, what … Continue reading

Your Cranky Baby Might Be Einstein

Okay not quite, but if you have a child that is cranky, with a little extra TLC he may just be at the top of his class when he gets to the 1st grade. I find this study interesting on several levels because I have had one of those cranky babies. But I’ll get to that in a minute. The study will be published tomorrow in the Journal of Child Development. Basically, they took approximately 1,300 families and followed the infants from 6 months of age through 1st grade. The hypothesis was that babies who were easy going would do … Continue reading

New Homes For Miss America and Simpson Book

Move over “Trading Spaces” and “A Baby Story” you’ve got a new neighbor… Miss America. Five months after getting the boot from Country Music Television, the beauty competition has found a new home on TLC. Network execs announced that it would air a reality show about Miss America, culminating with the finals on January 26, 2008 in Las Vegas. (The network also agreed to air the pageant for two years after that.) It’s hard to believe that the Miss America pageant, which once was a staple of life in Atlantic City and must-see TV in primetime has struggled to find … Continue reading

Let’s Talk Interview – With the Midwife

I conducted an interview with Eileen Denomme, a local homebirth midwife, to get an idea of what midwifery is all about. Here is what she had to say: Me: What led you to midwifery? Eileen: I think it was a combination of having 4 children born at home, and noticing the huge contrast between those and the hospital births my friends and family members were having. Eventually, people were asking me to attend their home births, and after 3 years of observing the senior midwife’s role during prenatals and home births, putting in my college studies and reading midwifery text … Continue reading
