A Coat for Your Pregnant Belly

If it’s more than just a little bit cold out where you live, and if you are having trouble zipping or buttoning your winter coat as your pregnancy progresses, you may be wondering what to do. Since there is quite a bit more winter still to come, you need something to keep you warm. However, maternity coats can be quite expensive. Even though you may get over heated more easily than usual now that you are pregnant, going out in winter temperatures with only a sweater may not be enough to keep you warm. Trust me – during both of my pregnancies I would wake up sweating at night and have to turn down the blankets, but I still needed to wear a coat when I went outside in the winter.

If this is your first pregnancy and you plan to have more children, you may feel okay about investing in a maternity – specific winter coat. If your budget is tight, or you do not plan on having more children, consider borrowing a coat from a larger person such as your husband or your brother. You may also be able to find a coat in a larger size at a thrift store. Even if the coat is not designed for maternity, try it on and see how it looks. I had the good fortune of being given a stretchy fleece coat before I got pregnant that was a little too big. When I was pregnant, it worked perfectly.

There is also the option of layering, and tossing on a heavy shawl or poncho over your sweater. When it is cold out and you are pregnant, you do not have to suffer through being cold. There are options, so choose what best fits your budget and your style, and go out into the cold without shivering.
