Help Further the Cause of Adoption Research?

White parents who have adopted Asian children are being sought for a research study about adoptive families conducted by the University of Maryland at College Park. The survey is being conducted by a professor and a graduate student in the Department of Psychology at the University. The study, approved by the University’s Institutional Research Board (IBR) aims to help researchers learn more about international adoptive families and about the challenges faced by White parents in raising a child of a different race/culture. This is a one-time survey, completed on-line, which takes about 20-40 minutes to complete. I completed my survey … Continue reading

How Long Does An Adoption Search Take?

Every adoptee beginning a search is hoping that their search will be quick and easy and that there will be no snags. Is this possible? Sometimes. But more often than not, a search takes quite a bit of time and effort until its completion. To be quite honest, there is not any real answer to this question. There is no length or period of time that can be provided to anyone. However, there are several factors that can provide for a quicker more relaxed search. Organization Being as organized as you can during this time, is important. Keeping track of … Continue reading

Adoption Search Glossary

When you are beginning an adoption search, things can seem confusing and intimidating. You will come across all types of red tape, unhelpful people and doors slammed in your face. However, remain strong. Do a little research beforehand to know what problems you might face each step of the way. One of the first things I learned was that terminology was totally different for an adoption case than any other situation. I had no idea what the difference between my original birth certificate and my amended certificate was. I also had no idea what or who a triad was. I … Continue reading

Adoption Leave and Assistance

In my last entry I mentioned doing some research on adoption benefits that employers may offer. If you are planning on pursing adoption you should start your journey by calling your human resource department and see if they offer any. When you are speaking with them be sure to ask if the company offers any financial assistance to pay for the adoption process. Many employers offer paid leave but if your company is not one of the companies that offer it but your company has more than 50 employees they are obligated under the Federal Family Medical Leave Act to … Continue reading

National Adoption Day

My oldest son has to do an extra credit project on a holiday. He has a full list of holidays 3 full pages of holidays to be exact. He can choose any holiday he wants he could choose a national holiday like Fourth of July through the Hot Dog Day. Now he loves to eat so he was leaning towards Sandwich Day or Hot Dog day but instead I said we were going to do Nation Adoption Day. I am pretty sure that he will be the only one in the class doing a project on National Adoption Day. He … Continue reading

Should You Consider Adoption Part 1

Would you be surprised to know there are about 115,000 children in the foster care system in the United States waiting for a family to call their own? I am not sure what I can do just as a regular person to help people consider giving these kids a family. I am not sure where the hesitation comes from for people to adopt. I am going to go through some of the deterrents that I have heard. Adoption not only benefits the children you give a family but it also give you such a gift of the love of a … Continue reading

Single-Parenting vs. Adoption

Single parenting can come about in a number of ways. Some of us were thrust into it unwillingly as a result of a divorce, others are faced with a difficult decision; single parent or place. I have been on both ends of the single parenting spectrum. I was just out of high school and faced with the most difficult decision of my life. My boyfriend and I had just broken up less than 24 hours before I found myself pregnant. A good friend of mine found herself in a similar situation not long after I did. One of us chose … Continue reading

International vs Domestic Adoption

We have friends that are in China adopting a beautiful baby girl right now. The journey for them to adopt a baby from China started over five years ago. They knew since they got married that they wanted to adopt a baby girl from China they just did not realize how long the process would take. When you do an international adoption there are rules and guidelines that the country of origin requires for international adoption. It does not happen as fast as you see when some famous celebrity goes to a country and comes right home with a baby. … Continue reading

Adoption Support Groups Part II – The Group Needs You!!

Question time! If you are an adoptive parent, do you participate in a local support group? After a long and frustrating search, I finally found our local group. I had a very nice discussion with the post-adoption services coordinator about the group, about what we were looking for and/or hoping to find in the way of a group, and about how their support groups function. She mentioned right off the bat that the group is pretty new and so far attendance has been miserable, but we just sort of skimmed over that point initially… The group meets very close to … Continue reading

iPhone App for Pet Adoption

I blogged recently about pet adoption. I truly believe that adopting a pet from a shelter is the best way to take home an animal companion. There are so many animals to choose form right now too. With the economy hurting, many families and individuals are finding that they can no longer afford to keep their pets. It’s sad, but true. Shelters are overwhelmed with animals. One of the local news networks here ran a story about an area shelter that suspended its adoption fees to help families adopt pets. I called the shelter to find out how well it … Continue reading
