We get to the mall and as he starts to wander in the other direction, I say "where is your phone?". "At home" he says, so I make him stay with me. But then he only uses about 10 minutes a month! Excellent points. My son got a cell phone at age 11, and when my daughter turns 11 this year she will get one two. We, their parents, feel they need them for safety reasons. Sometimes classes and lessons end early and mom and dad are not on premises. The next cell phones both kids get will have tracking capabilities as well. Yes I got through my childhood, college and the first 5 years of marriage too without a cell phone... and I grew up near NYC! But after 10 years with a cell phone, it is definitely a lifeline. Missing people have been found and tragedies averted because of cell phones. While I understand the reasons schools may need to ban these devices, as a parent, in a post Columbine world, I would surely want some kind of compromise! Turns out I had a bleeding disorder and needed emerency intevervention. I had the second in the hospital too, for the bleeding disorder... I would have had to rip out the carpets (sorry).
