That's true bulletz in being non exclusive, I have found great educational resources outside of homeschooling tracks! Thanks for the input.

Disciplining Someone Else's Child - Blog Entry

28 Dec 2006 06:35 AM

I feel that If I am in someone elses home and I am not present, they can SPEAK to my kid about their behavior. I have had people be too harsh, and never visted them again.

If my child and I am out in public and my child does something wrong, I would like the person to say something to ME. I had a security guard grab my childs shoulder at a museum when she touched something, and I informed him of his error. "She was touching art" he said. "You are touching my art" I said. In all cases, strangers are better off speaking to the parent who actually may not have eyes in the back of their head. Had he taped me on the shoulder, instead, she would have been corrected.

The problem comes down to people being too strict or harsh. We all remember those people from our childhood. We don't want our kids subjected to that, do we?

The Child Protection System is in Trouble - Blog Entry

From what I can see, good foster parents are abused just as much as children are abused. I have friends who opened their home for two teenage kids with problems that were not revealed and now they will never do it again... neither will any of their friends who witnessed the damage to their family, and their kids, their home, and their marriage.

Child Left With Caretaker is Dead - Blog Entry

Even at age 10 and 12, I am still very wary about who I leave my kids with... This is such a tragic, tragic story. I feel horrible for the mom.

I grew up in a family of 11 people, we did the bath thing for the smaller children, often having two to three kids in the tub at once. These days however, few people do it.

Racial Issues in Placing Nannies - Blog Entry

I believe it. I have always had a very hard time keeping a housekeeper even though I pre-clean the house, pay generously, and am flexible. I try not to think about the race aspect, but sometimes I think that is the issue.

Where Did the Notion of Unschooling Come From? - Blog Entry

24 Dec 2006 12:35 PM

For the successful unschoolers I know there seems to be a "trick". The trick is to lessen or eliminate stimuli that will fry the brain like mindless TV and violent video games, and to make abundantly available items that will positively stimulate the brain like classical music, good books, educational programs and learning toys. Then they just let their kids "have at it", so to speak. In cases where a great deal of documentation is needed, the parent then basically follows the kids around and journals everything he or she does, as the child gets older, he or she learns to journal their "education" themselves.

But when you have to write goals at the beginning of the year like Valorie (and other New York Homeschoolers), that would still be difficult.

You are so right... a friend of mine had a daughter in honors geometry. While she struggled in the class, she aced the state exam... go figure!
