Yeah, I have a childhood ulcer from unrealistic expectations being labeled the "smart one" out of 9 kids, who would break the barriers and lead the family to greatness. Like you said, if you keep the encouragement and extra lessons fun, the kids will do well without getting too stressed.

I agree with this completely when it comes to life lessons. When it comes to education and life planning, I think a parent needs to set expectations. You WILL go to college. You WILL get good grades. You WILL NOT drive drunk. If you aim them toward the stars, you will at least get the moon.

Pam, your child definitely needs a teacher who thinks she is a genius. I am convinced that all kids have a genius in them... it is up to the teacher to find it and grow on it, not step on it while humoring the parent.

There is a time for everything. I think a teacher will go in and out of the phases you mentioned. From my own experiences, I would say that the better teachers are the ones who were excited work with the kids on a daily basis.
