When Teachers Compare Siblings

01 Jul 2008 03:21 PM

I had a teacher ruin phys-ed for me for this reason. My older step-sister had been a basketball star who went to college on a scholarship. She was 10 years older than me and about 8 inches taller. Still my phys ed teacher insisted on comparing us and would not accept that I was in no way a natural athlete. She thought I was being purposeful about not being able to get a the basketball near the hoop when in fact, I was the family nerd. Because she expected more from me she graded me harder meaning while I got A's in all my classes, phys ed grades kept me off the honor roll.

More Famous People and the Schools they Attended

It is interesting how many highly successful people had a non-standard or above par education. I think having a specialized education leads to a more creative mind and more independent thinking.

School's Involvement in Homeschooling: Question Answered

28 Jun 2008 09:19 PM

I agree that schools should be available IF needed, and many are. I don't feel however that schools should be at the mercy of homeschoolers because parents need to make a decision and stick to it. As you know, I don't think homeschooler should have any more mandatory laws than we already have... we already know what too many regulations has done to public schools. There would be no point of even homeschooling.

Surprising Code of Ethics for Arkansas Teachers

26 Jun 2008 12:24 PM

I find the whole thing reprehensible and don't believe that a job should have that much control over a teachers life. Outside of stripping, drugs, alcohol ABUSE, and sexual deviancy, it is really no one's business what a teacher does outside of school. It just looks like another way to frighten away good teachers.

Pros and Cons of Looping

26 Jun 2008 12:20 PM

I guess you could call homeschooling the opposite in looping! I did have a consecutive teacher in elementary school, and she made it a point that while she was familiar with the kids to give the a fresh start at the beginning of the school year. I think this is something the teacher has to lead.

Massachusetts Plan May Allow 16 Year Old Students to Graduate

23 Jun 2008 08:46 PM

You always get me on that last paragraph! This is great news. I had an older brother who was an A student but dropped out six months before graduation because he was sick of being treated like a child. I run into students like this all the time, who are capable of graduating and are bored with school and would rather be working... if they can pass the test and parents can guide them through an internship or a couple of years of work, than let them do it.

Invalid Reasons to Homeschool: A Rebuttal to a Public Educators Opinion

23 Jun 2008 03:03 PM

Very true Adam, and I use a co-op type program to homeschool my kids. They attend two days a week and do the rest of their work at home. Still, while it is A Way to homeschool, it is hardly the only way.

Unschooling, Homeschooling, Classroom: Choose the Method that Meets the Needs of the Child

23 Jun 2008 09:41 AM

Very well written.

Per the comment of getting input from a four-yea-old. I think middle school is a better place to get a child's opinion. Still you must remember that middle school and highschool are the years when a child does the most damage to him or herself. Still it might not hurt to put a child who wants to be in school in school. If it was meant to be... fine. If not, he or she will come running back asking to homeschool!

Invalid Reasons to Homeschool - A Public Educator's Opinion

23 Jun 2008 09:35 AM

OOOOH Girl!

I was with you until point three! I don't disagree with your arguments, to a certain degree, but just want to clarify a few things that are hard to see from that side of the fence.

I started writing a comment, but it turned into a blog post, so I will post a rebuttal on the homeschooling blog.

I do know that you respect and even admire homeschooling just as much as I admire anyone who can teach and take care of a room full of children. So, Come visit my post which should be live soon... I would love for you to add any comments.
