Teachers vs. Homeschoolers, an analogy

08 Jun 2009 11:19 AM

I went back and read the article you are referencing and I WILL NEVER AGAIN FEEL ALONE in my homeschooling endeavors. I really had no idea so many people were "on my side."

Teachers vs. Homeschoolers, an analogy

I like your analogies about food and homeschooling! I may use them in conversation :) Like you said, both (homeschool & public school) have their place and fulfill needs. There doesn't have to be one right way.

What homeschooling means to me

Homeschooling means academic freedom. We haven't been homeschooling very long, but so far the best thing for us has been the academic flexibility. With younger kids, the extracurricular activities like sports or theater aren't really a focus.

Popular Homeschool Spanish Curriculum

Have you ever used "Muzzy" for younger kids. I have heard and read that it is really great but haven't met anybody who has ever used it. What do you think of this program?

My homeschooled son is socially awkward

17 Feb 2009 05:45 PM

This is a good example of the fact that there are different people wherever you go -- public school, homeschool, churches, parks, libraries. If we judge people by their circumstances -- i.e. "he is homeschooled so he must be awkward" -- then we are being unfair and probably a bit prejudiced. My son is shy, and homeschool works great because he can feel comfortable and appreciated. My daughter is VERY social, and homeschool works great because she is more likely to complete her studies at home than in a classroom, where she did more talking than studying!

What are you teaching on Inauguration day?

I agree with jeannieisnew. We also chose to emphasize the inaguration (sp?) as a special ceremony and what it means to support/respect a person in authority, even if you don't always agree with them. We watched the swearing in and talked about what a big responsibility it is being President, no matter who you are! I was surprised that my kids (ages 9,7,4) watched as much of it as they did (about 1 hour, when the swearing-ins occurred and Presidential speech) and it did generate some interesting questions from them. ("Is he gonna be prezdent ferever?" from my 4-yr-old) Good discussions. We are glad we didn't miss it.

Reasons I am glad we homeschool: Cheating on tests

I enjoyed your post, Andrea. It has made me think of many other things, such as student-to-teacher ratios, teacher quality and preparedness, student motivation, parental involvement, and the like. As parents, we really need to take more careful consideration of the environments our children are in but also who is teaching and what is being taught. Thanks for a great article.

Is your homeschoolers plate too full?

03 Jan 2009 03:48 PM

It's nice to know even experienced homeschoolers have to cut-back and reprioritize their activities. It is so easy to add, but tough to drop activities. This year, our first homeschooling, I have rearranged our subjects/schedules twice since September, trying to find just the right fit for my kids. Now I don't feel so badly about making them choose just one or two favorite extra-curricular activities.

Homeschooling in December

Thank you for addressing this--you've validated me! We are homeschooling this year after 4 years in public school and I have run into some fierce "student" resistance lately. I think we will take at least part of the month off and just have some wholesome fun!

Reasons I am glad we homeschool: Hit a Jew Day

Kids can be cruel whether in the neighborhood or at school, but it always seems to be worse in larger groups. My son had similar experiences in public school last year with his teacher making an embarassing fuss about his (my son's) diabetes, then classmates continuing the taunts and teasing. It was awful!
