MTA Begins Pilot Program to Help Pregnant Commuters

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has launched a pilot program designed to encourage customers to offer pregnant, disabled, and senior riders a seat. The program is modeled after a program that has been used in London. It will be the first program of its kind in the United States. MTA already provides disabled customers with “priority seating” on busses and trains. While riders are required to relinquish seats in those areas under federal regulations and MTA rules of conduct, new courtesy buttons can help riders better identify which customers need seats. The campaign also encourages customers, as a matter of … Continue reading

Pregnant: Am I Doing It Right?

During my pregnancy I’ve felt a couple times like I wasn’t “doing it right.”  Not that I wasn’t taking care of my body or baby properly, but that I didn’t care enough, and that meant I wasn’t going to be very good at this whole mothering thing.  I didn’t feel that way in response to serious events, or in the face of friends with children, or anything like that. It started when I was asked “what’s your countdown?”  I had no idea what the person was talking about.  Apparently it meant how many days left until my due date.  I … Continue reading

Pregnant Amusement Park Adventures

Going to the nearby amusement park is something my husband’s parents do every year. We have accompanied them on several occasions. When they asked us to go this year all I could think was that pregnancy and amusement parks really do not go together. The rides that I usually enjoy are not safe for expecting mothers and I really have to wonder if the hassle of parking, the crowds, and the lines would really be worth the trip this year. For the sake of the grandparents and for the potential fun that our son might have, we went anyway. As … Continue reading

Tips for Camping While Pregnant

One of America’s favorite summer past times is camping in the great outdoors. My family and I will be heading out to a nearby state park this weekend to camp with some friends. One of them happens to be pregnant. The last time I went camping, I was also pregnant, but I was only three and half months along. I am looking forward to seeing her, but I also can’t help but wonder what it’s going to be like for her. Sleeping in a tent with a big belly? No air conditioning? (What do you think, Sarah? I hope I … Continue reading
