In high school, there were some days when the seniors were allowed to come in later. When it was my turn, I did feel more refreshed and ready to start the day. But I'm not sure if it was because I maybe got more sleep or the fact that I had missed two of my classes. My high school was on the block schedule so we only attended four classes a day. I was able to work my schedule to where I had my academic classes in the morning and electives or PE classes were in the afternoon. This made me feel more relaxed just because I had gotten the tough part of the day out of the way. So, I'm not sure that if I was still in high school that I would want school to start later. I would just want to get it over with....the quicker the better! High Schools: Back to One Path? - Blog Entry19 Nov 2008 07:50 PM I agree with the One Path. Just because if a student decides later that they do want to go to college and get a degree in something they will be able to. But at the same time, electives could be given to the students to teacher different aspects of different trades for the students who will not attend a university. The Danger of MegaSchools - Blog Entry19 Nov 2008 07:43 PM My school was arranged with the elementary, middle and high schools within walking distance of each other as well. Whenever the elementary school was in need of volunteers the high school usually provided students from PE classes for the day. The students were actually a lot of help. Farm to (2) School Programs Offer Organic, Locally Grown School Lunches - Blog Entry19 Nov 2008 07:41 PM The Future Farms of America at the school that I graduated from is actually trying to get a program like this. They want to be able to grow a garden on campus and provide the vegetables to the students. They already have a greenhouse where they sell flowers each spring and fall to the community. Schools Required to Improve Dropout Rates - Blog Entry19 Nov 2008 08:36 AM I'm not sure that these new rules will drastically change things. Things should change within the school to prevent the students from ever dropping out in the first place. If this problem was changed then we wouldn't have to worry about this. But t the same time, the schools should work towards getting their students back in the schools or at least in a program to get their GED. Types of Distance Learning Education - Blog Entry19 Nov 2008 08:30 AM Distance learning has always been intriguing to me. While some learners are great at studying and doing things on their own, others are not so good at it. I have taken a few online classes myself and it was not always successful. I am much more comfortable with actually going to a class and having an actual teacher their to help me. Not to mention, with online classes you lose the social interaction with your fellow peers. Dating Violence in Schools - Blog Entry18 Nov 2008 08:23 PM I wish something like this had been taught in my schools. I have never seen a teenage relationship actually get physically abusive but I have seen them get borderline mentally and emotionally abusive. The sad thing is that people get in these relationships and never realize that it is getting bad. I think if something like this was taught it would really help out. Preschoolers and ADHD Research - Blog Entry17 Nov 2008 09:20 PM I know that everyone with ADD or ADHD is different, but if a lot more parents were like your's there may not be as many kids diagnosed with it. ADHD is definitely something that kids struggle with everyday, but it is often looked at as a discipline problem. I'm not totally sure on where I stand with it. I think I would need to be exposed to more information on it. However, I do think that ages 3 and 4 may be too young to diagnose ADHD. Does "Bully Education" Really Work? - Blog Entry17 Nov 2008 08:35 AM I agree with Tom. Most of the time, when a child is bullying another child, there are some issues he or she is dealing with. This could be issues at home that the parents need to confront or it could be other things such as peer pressure. I think we should look more at the child doing the bullying than actually what they are doing. The Danger of MegaSchools - Blog Entry16 Nov 2008 03:56 PM Personally, I like the idea of a smaller school with a smaller teacher to student ratio. I worked in a daycare for a while and it was a lot easier when there were less students to control. You were able to get a lot more done and it was easier to control the "trouble makers" in the class. Not only would you be able to know your co-workers better but also the students and their parents. Growing up in a small school I noticed that most of the time the teachers not only knew your parents but your entire family as well. Knowing your students this well it is easier to relate with the students. 1 2 |
