Ethnic Culture Class, Part 1 - Blog Entry

Such a good topic Ed, thank you. I too grew up in the south during the fifties. I remember the segregation. I started educating my bio son as soon as he was able to understand the conversation. We celebrated MLK day because I remember Dr. King and even as a young girl admired him tremendously. We too are a biracial blend. Our youngest is half hispanic and is very curious about his heritage. He looks very hispanic so occasionally someone will speak Spanish to him and he is lost. I am teaching him the Spanish I know. Knowing our roots is very important. I really enjoy your blogs, they hit home a lot. Artcraft

A Tragic Adoption Experience - Blog Entry

Unfortunately the system is very flawed. We too are in Texas and went through the state. Every step was new to us and although there were attorneys and caseworkers all around us, our questions went unanswered or we were given different advice, depending on who we talked to. It was a nightmare, but we got through it. Had someone taken the time to explain to us, we wouldv'e received more help than we got. Artcraft

Adoptive Parents Need Rest - Blog Entry

Ed, I can so relate. We talk about doing it, but never do. We have no family close by and although the boys are older, because of their issues, we would not leave them alone. Galveston is my hometown, I would love to spend a night down there. Paul and I used to go once a yr. I got a free condo night from my emp. and we would go out to dinner, Moody Gardens, stroll the seawall and just relax. What a treat! Glad you got away. Artcraft

Ed, I sometimes look at the boys and shudder, wondering where they would be now, if they weren't here. Life was very hard for them before they came here. I am so glad God decided we were the ones to care for them. Art

We've been told we were crazy too! I think our well meaning friends just don't understand that God has a purpose for all of us, we are just lucky enough to know what it is. Art

State Agency: Help or Hindrance? - Blog Entry

Oh Ed, I can sooo relate. When we first got the boys, we were told they had medicaid, no papers no list of drs. no way to schedule appts. w/o this info. Took an act of congress for me to get the information I needed. For 2 yrs. I received phone calls "reminding" me the boys were scheduled for a physical or needed to go to the dentist; these socalled reminders would come several weeks AFTER they had their teeth checked or went to the pcp. I would assure them the boys were current on all checkups; a week later someone else from CPS would call and "remind" me. Ahh, the frustration. The examples go on and on. I just learned to outtalk them. When they called for to reprimand, they got a detailed description of the dr. visit, beginning to end, arrival time, departure time and everything that happened in between. Somebody somewhere in CPS knows everything about Daniel's bicuspids!!! Art

How heartwrenching that a wonderful surprise for Walter's birthday would initially put fear in his heart. It seems they all come to us with holes in their hearts. Art

Adoption Day - Blog Entry

I remember well our day in court. I had to get on the stand and the kids' attorney kept asking questions. I would give her long, drawn out answers, because when I talk about my kids, I enjoy it!! The judge smiled and granted us permanent custody, as the bailiff guided me off the stand and out of the courtroom, I asked him if I sounded okay, he smiled and winked at me and said, You did great! What a marvelous day for us all! We celebrated with the boys, its a day we'll never forget. Artcraft
