He was initially given Ritalin and his system couldn't tolerate it, no matter what dose. Adderall didn't work either. We tried different doses of Strattera and he is now where he needs to be with his meds. I agree completely with staying on the same page with your child's teachers, they can be your extra eyes and be a great deal of help when determining if meds are working. Many of us would not even be able to consider bringing children into our homes w/o some kind of financial help. We would not have been able to take the boys had the state not given us medicaid. Randy's meds alone are an expense we couldn't fit in the budget. Let alone, the psychiatrist, therapist, pcp, evals, ER visits, to name a few. We are able to feed, clothe, supply them with the games and toys kids want, if we budget properly. The love is free, so we don't need any help from the state there. I can assure anyone that feels our kids don't deserve this extra help or that we don't require it, that their tax dollars will pay for a lot more in the long run, when these kids grow up to be career criminals because there was no loving home to teach them to be productive, law abiding citizens. Artcraft Adoption Subsidy Payments02 Jan 2007 07:39 PM This is eerie, you really can read my mind!! I just posted a comment on HMA earlier today on my opinion about govt. subsidy for our kids. One of my points was helping willing parents as opposed to the state absorbing the whole cost including the prison time they most likely would accrue as dysfunctional adults because they didn't have loving parents and a stable home. You're good Ed!! ADHD: Myths and Parental Guides02 Jan 2007 09:45 AM I understand, Ed. Randy was diagnosed severe ADHD with a big accent on hyperactivity. After 2 yrs of love and consistency in his family life, I see a dramatic reduction in his negative behaviors. Even the impulse issue has diminished considerably. Meds help, but I think the primary reason for such a drastic change for the better was alleviating the dysfunction and confusion in his life. Let me stress this is not a cure all for every ADHD child. Many already have a stable and loving homelife. I do feel some of the symptoms can be alleviated in a stressed child's life with love and a consistent routine. The impulse disorder we work on with an example of cause and effect.
