It has never ceased to amaze me the names we choose for our grandparents. Living in the south seems to have a peculiar influence on the silly nicknames given to these revered loved ones. When I was younger, way before joining the ranks of grandparenting, I vowed I would never answer to any of the inane titles parents teach their children to address grandmother. I am not a Meemaw, Mawmaw, Mamaw, Granny or a Big Momma, nor do I want to be refered to as one. I prefer something more respectful, more stately. The trouble is, there isn't anything out there that even remotely sounds respectable enough to have reverance for my title. When my son and daughter in law informed me I was to become a grandmother, after the initial joy, I diligently began to" pick my handle". I lingered on Gram, fretted over NaNa, was fond of Nonny, thought Grandma would work if it didn't include "Ma" and decided on Mimi. After two years of being a Mimi, I am now having second thoughts at this too late date. Although it doesn't have that "southern drawl" ring of Meemaw, or the derogotory inuendo of Big Momma, I have decided I sound like a french poodle. It is, of course, too late to change my title at this point. I guess I will just learn to live with the fact that I am now addressed as someone who sounds like they need to go to the groomer.
