12 Oct 2006 08:06 PM Making Good Choices
Our lives are the sum total of the choices we have made. This is one of many important ongoing lessons we are trying to teach our three boys. We do answer to decisions made in the present, on down the road. This is a rather abstract lesson, so it takes daily examples to get the boys to understand that everything we do, affects us as well as others. Our future depends on the decisions we make today. I have used several examples along the way. Randy is in his first year of high school, while we were choosing accredited classes and an elective, I tried to instill in him how important his choices were. These decisions will impinge on his college and career choice. Its never too early to begin making wise decisions. This lesson can also be applied to being able to avoid consequences by not making a wrong decision. During a rather indepth talk on the subject, one of the boys used his biological mother's choice to use drugs as an example of wrong decisions and the aftermath of her choice. I was proud that he was able to discuss such a sad topic so rationally and came up with a good example of the subject matter we were discussing. Because all three boys have a similiar past and have been directly affected by parental drug abuse, it was an excellent example to get the point across. Learning this life lesson teaches our children to think before acting, to accept consequences for their actions and to build self esteem by making the right choices and enjoying the fruits of good, solid decision making.
