A Plethora of Printable Coupons – Week of August 1, 2011

In my opinion, there are two types of printable coupons that you can find online. One type requires you to install a certain kind of software onto your computer in order to get the coupon. The other kind simply lets you print it out from the website it comes from, without having to jump through (too many) hoops. Here are some easily printable coupons that I found that can be used right now. Toys R Us has a coupon that you can get if you “like” them on Facebook. The coupon will save you 20% on one regular priced toy … Continue reading

In Memoriam – 2009 – Part 4

As Michele mentioned in my last blog, the list of dead celebrities seems to get longer and longer each year. Here are more we lost in 2009: July 19 – Frank McCourt (78) McCourt, a Pulitzer Prize winner, was best known for his memoir Angela’s Ashes. He died of melanoma. July 23 – E. Lynn Harris (54) The African American author who specialized in writing about gay men had ten consecutive books on the New York Times Best Seller list. He died in Los Angeles while on a business meeting. The cause of death was listed as heart disease. August … Continue reading

The Pop Culture Week in Review – September 5, 2009

As we all get ready to head into a long Labor Day weekend, I am going to take time to review the pop culture events that happened over the last week. Two celebrities were buried this weekend. Michael Jackson’s body finally got to its eternal resting place after almost 10 weeks. The singer was buried in a private ceremony at the Great Mausoleum at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California. Like in life, Michael will be surrounded by stars in death. Also buried at the cemetery are Jimmy Stewart, George Burns, Errol Flynn, Spencer Tracy, Humphrey Bogart, and Dorothy Dandridge. … Continue reading

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease

In August 2009 my toddler and I flew from DFW to the Ontario Airport in Southern California. We were going to spend time with my family. Not long after arriving, Jessie started acting not like herself. We didn’t know what the problem was, so we decided to take her to the doctor. I found an urgent care with a pediatrician. My mom, sister, and I took Jessie. The facility was fine, but the pediatrician was not. She didn’t interact well with Jessie at all and told me that she had herpes in her throat. This was not a diagnosis I … Continue reading

Is Aerosmith Looking for New Lead Singer?

There are certain things that just shouldn’t happen. The Mona Lisa shouldn’t smile, the Leaning Tower of Pisa shouldn’t be straighten, and Aerosmith shouldn’t perform with any lead singer other than Steven Tyler, but the last one may be a distinct possibility. In case you missed it, after months of speculation that he was using drugs again, Tyler checked into rehab at the end of last year. He had injured his leg during a concert in Connecticut in June 2009 then he fell off the stage on August 2009. The band cancelled several dates after the fall, but returned for … Continue reading

Anthem is Discontinuing My Health Insurance Policy

Anthem Blue Cross has decided that they are going to “discontinue” the health insurance policy that they sold me about four months ago. There is absolutely nothing I can do about it. I feel like the company lied to me, and I also feel like this is a form of “bait and switch”. Those of you who have been following my blogging here on the Families.com Insurance blog already know about how hard I’ve struggled to find health affordable health insurance coverage. In 2009, I lost my job as a teachers aide, which meant that I lost my insurance coverage … Continue reading

European Adventures

If you haven’t already booked your summer flight to London to witness sports history unfold before your eyes, you may be out of luck. According to travel experts, despite fares increasing nearly 20 percent over last year, flights to England are being snatched up by travelers attending the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, which run July 27 to August 12. The U.S. Commerce Department’s Office of Travel and Tourism Industries’ website notes that nearly 13 million Americans visited Europe in 2009. That number is estimated to increase by at least 35 percent in 2012 thanks to the Olympics and the Diamond … Continue reading

Madonna’s Daughter Caught Smoking

It seems like I’ve read that teen smoking is down. But, that may not be the case if you are the teen of a celebrity. Just this week, Madonna’s 15-year-old daughter Lourdes Leon was photographed smoking with friends. Now, I’ve never smoked, but some who have may be thinking “What’s the big deal? It’s what you do when you are that age.” Part of the problem is at only 15; Lourdes shouldn’t be smoking for several reasons. First, she cannot legally buy cigarettes until she is 18. And second of all, we all know – smoking is bad for you. … Continue reading

Curse of the Car Cart

There I stood. I stood contemplating which cart I should choose for that day’s shopping quest. That’s where it all began. I relive this moment in my mind wishing the chance to go back and listen to better judgment and select old faithful. Why is it sometimes so easy to depart from our better judgment. For once I’d like to walk hand in hand, side by side, arm in arm with my better judgment. Sadly, I left my better judgment and walked off into Kroger alone. I selected the car cart. Yes, the car cart…the envy of toddlers and preschoolers … Continue reading
