Grammar Girl's Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing - Podcast Review - Blog Entry

24 Feb 2008 05:08 PM

As one who has worked as a manuscript assessor, I am appalled at some of the grammar mistakes I see. But agree that sometimes the rules are there to be broken eg the one regarding ending with a preposition. And of course, if writing dialogue, the voice is more important than perfect English. I've just come back from a writing conference - blog 'Listen, Learn and Then?' and while we didn't cover grammar, we did touch on a lot of other writing related issues. Good fun! When I get a chance I will catch up on the podcast you mentioned.

Like you,I am a big fan of John Cusack and enjoyed Must Love Dogs but haven't seen this one . I will certainly keep an eye out for it next time we are looking for a DVD to rent, which doesns't happen all that often. I also liked My Big Fat Greek Wedding which you mentioned on the Must Love Dogs review. MBFGW seems to appear on TV on a regular basis here in Australia. It was actually on this week but it hadn't been that long since we'd seen it.

Are You Prepared for Your Kids to Do the Same Thing(s) You Do? - Blog Entry

Couldn't agree more. And it's only when we see or hear our kids saying or doing something we have done, that we realise how bad it is. I've also written about the need to be good example in my blog 'Getting it Wrong'

Good blog. For those who have trouble talking of Jesus a book to a Non-christian friend or family member can help open the door. I've just written a blog about this.

Fathers, Sons, and Poems - Blog Entry

As a poet myself and one who teaches poetry workshops, I enjoyed reading this blog about poems and fining a couple of new poems to use in classes. Have you ever read any of Les Murray's poems about his father and his mother? Brilliant. Also have a look at some by Andrew Lansdown - another Australian poet (and one of my favorites) who has written some great poems about his sons. I have some poems on my website www.daleharcombe.com. and I've linked to this blog in a blog I wrote today about 'showing love.'

Dangerous Foods For Dogs - Blog Entry

I found this interesting. We have had dogs all my life and puppies always got weak milky tea and toast for breakfast and we've never had any pronblems with any of them. Most died from old age. As to onions, a friend told me this recently. I had never heard this before either and most of our dogs have been fed table scraps, which means if it was a casserole or stew or lasagne or something that had onion in it, they would have got it.

Do Parents of Only Children Play with Their Children More? - Blog Entry

15 Feb 2008 08:13 PM

I was an only child and loved it. My parents took time to play games with me but I also played happily with a street full of other kids and relatives that we saw a lot. Then I was happy to read and play imaginative games on my own as well. I also had an only child for a number of years. He enjoyed playing board games etc with me and his dad but was also happy on his own. I think it's important for parents to spend time with their, whether they have one or half a dozen kids. Mine did and that's one of the reasons I was close to them. The same with both of my two who are now grown and we still have a great relationship.

Neither of us would buy a car, a TV or any other purchase without the other along. We work as a team and make decisions together. When it comes to paying bills, he does it these days. I have done it in the past.
