Christmas Shopping for Baby

Last night my husband and I perused the toy aisle in Walmart, looking for ideas for our son’s Christmas present. He is just over a year and a half now, and pretty much anything that has wheels or involves horses is sure to get him excited. The problem we’ve been facing is trying to find a toy that will not only reflect his favorite things, but will also be age appropriate and hopefully so for a long time. We don’t want to get him something that he will outgrow in 3-6 months. It should at least last until next Christmas … Continue reading

Freezing Meals for After the Baby

This is my fourth pregnancy. I’ve never done much to prepare meals before the other three babies were born. This time, I plan to prepare ahead. With a new baby in the house and three other children, I know I won’t want to cook. I plan to spend the latter half of my third trimester preparing meals and freezing them for after the baby arrives. I’ve started collecting recipes for meals that will keep well in the freezer. First, I made a list of all the meals we normally eat that would work as freezer meals. These included lasagna, stuffed … Continue reading

Preparing Children for the New Baby

A new baby is an exciting time, but can be disruptive to the family routine. Younger children and toddlers may feel these changes most dramatically. Jealousy is very common and can be the result of the loss of attention. Some toddlers adjust easily to this change, but for many it can be difficult. Your little one may engage in attention getting behaviors, become demanding or cry easily. By preparing your child and taking some steps to help her adjust, you can help avoid some of the feelings that cause these changes in behavior. While you are pregnant, you will most … Continue reading

Fall/Winter Maternity Wardrobe

I have put off maternity clothes shopping for a little while for two reasons. First, I want to make sure that the maternity clothes that I do buy fit me and are comfortable when I really need them. Second, most of the clothes in the maternity boutiques have been summer apparel and sun dresses and shorts really do not work very well in the fall and winter weather. The one time I did go maternity clothes shopping this summer was with my pregnant sister. Ironically, I actually did find a couple of “long shirt/dress tops” that would work really well … Continue reading

Things to Do When You Are Overdue

With three of my four pregnancies, my due date passed with no baby. Two of my girls were five days late. My son was eight days past his due date when he decided to join the family. The days after the due date are the longest and slowest days of my entire life. Here’s a fun list of things to do when you are overdue. Whatever you do, try not to spend all your time cleaning the house. A certain amount of “nesting” is normal in the days and weeks before the baby is born. The urge to clean everything … Continue reading
