Baby Blues or Postpartum Depression

After giving birth a woman goes through a myriad of emotions. The drop in hormones at such a rapid rate after giving birth can trigger feelings of depression. It is not uncommon for a woman to go through many emotional changes as she encounters the changes in her life a baby brings. Some women feel unattractive, some are still experiencing pain or had difficult births, and some may have relationship problems which can contribute to feelings of depression. For many these feelings subside yet others experience a more serious depression called postpartum depression. What are the differences? Baby Blues The … Continue reading

My Nursing Story

About a decade ago I only knew a few women who nursed. When I made the decision to nurse my child I was in the minority. As the years went on it has become more popular once again. It seems that moms who bottle feed are in the minority. It was a strange feeling to be on both sides of this issue. As one who nursed around few who nursed and as one who bottle fed when everyone around were nursing. I remember the comments when I had my first baby. Many asked me how I knew my baby was … Continue reading

Milk Problems

I breastfeed. I’ve breastfed all three of my children and I love it. Not only is it the best food for baby, but it gives me downtime with my little ones that is strictly between them and me. No one can substitute for me, no one can take my place. It’s a bonding experience that I couldn’t imagine not having with my babies. But about four weeks ago, I had a really nasty cold. I took some anti-histamines. The next day I found out that it really wasn’t a cold, it was the flu. A flu that was accompanied by … Continue reading

The Truth About Nursing

I can only speak from my own experience. I have nursed 2 babies until they were 14 months old each. So, I do have a little experience. And, I am 100% pro-nursing. Although, one thing I think no one ever really said about nursing was the ugly truth. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Here is what I can tell you: Nursing is wonderful. You do bond with your baby. You do love it. But, it is also hard. When I had my daughter this is the one thing that I think I kept saying to myself, “Why did … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: Our Whole Family Isn’t Invited to the Wedding

Question: A cousin of mine is getting married in a few months and on the invitation she invited myself and my husband but not the baby. My baby will only be 4 months old when she gets married. Isn’t it rude of her not to invite the whole family? So what should I do? Do I tell her that we won’t come unless she invites the baby? (I’m not comfortable leaving the baby as I am nursing.) Or do I go anyways despite her being selective? Since this isn’t the marriage blog I won’t spend a lot of time on … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: Can I Still Breastfeed if my Baby is Lactose Intolerant

Yesterday, I answered a reader’s question about whether or not it was possible to be unable to digest breast milk due to lactose intolerance. We discussed the difference between primary lactose intolerance and secondary lactose intolerance. While primary lactose intolerance is extremely rare and is a genetic disorder, secondary lactose intolerance is always caused by damage to the gut. It is a temporary condition as long as the gut is allowed to heal. What causes secondary lactose intolerance? Anything that damages the gut, where lactase is produced, can cause secondary lactose intolerance. The condition need not be permanent however, as … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: Early Exposure to Allergens

Question: My oldest son has a very serious peanut allergy. I have two questions. I have heard that eating peanut butter while breastfeeding can cause a peanut allergy. If this is true, could I have caused my son‘s allergies while breastfeeding him? If so, should I avoid peanuts while breastfeeding this one that I’m expecting? Or should I avoid breastfeeding this new baby altogether? One very commonly accepted theory of how young kids get allergies is that they were over exposed to the allergen very early in life. However, we don’t really know exactly why some kids are more prone … Continue reading

Is Your Baby’s Bottle Safe?

It has long been agreed upon by scientists that breastfeeding is the way to go when it comes to feeding your baby. Breastfeeding has been linked statistically to numerous health benefits including making your baby smarter, being developmentally advanced, reduced allergies, reduced risk of cancer and just about everything else under the sun that could be healthy and good for your baby. While formula cannot come close to mimicking breast milk perhaps another variable in the “breast is better” statistics is that hard plastic bottles have now been found to leak a dangerous chemical into the bottle’s liquid. An independent … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: Should I Use a Nipple Shield?

Question: My nipples are sore and cracked. If I use a nipple shield, will it help them heal faster? Also, how do I use a nipple shield. Generally speaking, the answer is a resounding NO! You should never use a nipple shield outside of the care of a qualified IBCLC (lactation consultant). Most lactation consultants will not encourage you to use a nipple shield either but rather will work with you to fix the latch (which is the problem if your nipples are cracked and bleeding). Nipple shields are useful in a few instances but we’ll get to that in … Continue reading

Strategies for Tandem Nursing

We’ve been talking about why people might want to nurse through pregnancy and breastfeed their toddler and infant at the same time. There are numerous benefits to doing so, although the decision, is not necessarily an easy one to make. With that said, there are strategies you can implement to help make it a little easier. Setting boundaries All of my children have been over a year when I’ve gotten pregnant with the next one (or two!) With the exception of my oldest daughter (and I’ll deal with her situation in a minute), the older baby was eating solids but … Continue reading
