I love cereal and so do my kids. I don't normally buy cereal that is high in sugar (that doesn't mean that my kids don't add sugar). Typically we have Cheerios, Mulit-grain Cheerios, Life, Shredded Wheat, frosted shredded wheat (I justify that one because it is whole grain wheat used), chex, etc....Sometimes they put a banana on their cereal, and on occasion, my kids will also eat toast (whole wheat) with peanut butter, yogurt and granola, or instant oatmeal (yes, I know it is full of sugar!). I used to buy highly sugared cereals but then I started to think, if that is all my kids are having for breakfast, I should at least make it as healthy as I can. Another Example Of Bad Parenting - Blog Entry03 Jan 2007 02:39 PM Yes, I am with Teresa and Valorie who have experienced this instance with my own children. In fact, I know very few mothers that have NOT experienced a wandering child at least once in their journey of motherhood. My children also could undo locks, even the high ones. It is without a doubt the most frightening thing to come out from folding laundry or working on something, thinking your two year old is quitly watching Sesame Street or Blues Clues and having the front door wide open with a missing toddler. Fortunatly, I never had to notify the police, but I have know several others who have. It sounds as though this mother needs some help. I read it and thought that it sounded like she suffered from a severe case of depression. Depression can be dibilitating. Regardless, I still feel for the children involved.... Family Home Evening: The Twelve Days of Christmas - Blog Entry04 Dec 2006 01:55 PM This is such a great idea. I have planned on doing the 12 days of Christmas for two seperate families that are having a hard time this holiday season, and I wanted my kids to be involved, but other than having them run it up to the house, I wasn't sure how. Thanks for the Friend link to the story. I really appreciate it. Is Santa Real? - Blog Entry30 Nov 2006 12:40 PM I am with Lisa! Santa is real. He just doesn't wear a furry red suit.... When we asked my parents about Santa, they told us that Santa only brings presents to those who believe in him and that was that. That is also what I told my 8 1/2 year old daughter when she asked me this year. We will keep it that way. :) Christmas was always such a magical time for me growing up even during my teenage years and Santa was part of that magic. Why spoil that? As far as Santa not being the reason for the season, I agree to an extent, however, what more of a Christlike person are you going to find than someone who has spent his entire life serving and bringing happiness to the children of the world. Christmas is what you make of it and if you choose to make it all about Santa and not about the birth of Chirst, then that is your own loss. I find it rather easy to combine them both to make a wonderful time of year for me and my kids. Diary of an Overweight Mom: I'm Getting a Divorce - Blog Entry18 Nov 2006 12:04 PM I was thinking the same thing! I came one here expecting to offer you support for a devestating situation in your life.... glad to know it is the sweets you are divorcing. :) Good luck! Can A Family Have Too Many Kids? - Blog Entry08 Nov 2006 01:29 PM I have 8 brothers and 2 sisters (yes, 11 in all). I LOVE every minute of it. We are all really, really close, even though we are all grown. I never felt like I didn't get enough attention, I probably had the happiest childhood of anyone I know! Those who voted yes just don't know what they are missing and it is their loss. Should You Discipline Other People's Children? - Blog Entry07 Nov 2006 11:10 AM This has been an interesting article. I haven't really thought about it much. I have verbally told kids to behave themselves that were not mine... but that is a rareity as I don't very often see other kids misbehaving. I DO have a BIG problem with people diciplining my kids when I am sitting (or standing) right there. If they saw something that I didn't then okay, let me know and I will deal with it. However, if my children are misbehaving and I am not around, I would expect a responsible adult to call them on their behavior. False Teachers - Blog Entry25 Oct 2006 07:07 AM Prayer is really the ultimate way of knowing if what we are being taught is true or not. God will let us know in our hearts if what we are hearing is good and something from him. :) The NEA Addresses the School Dropout Crisis - Blog Entry09 Oct 2006 01:47 PM I think what my school district is doing would do wonders... I am pretty sure that the drop out rate has dropped, but I can't seem to find the actual statistics anywhere. Aside from the regular public schools, my school district has several charter or magnet schools as well. These are just teaching through the arts (K-8), and year round for elementary schools, but where I think it makes the biggest impact on the drop out rate is in the middle and high school ones. There are middle and high schools that cater to those who are high risk for dropping out. The class sizes are smaller and the school is quite a bit smaller which gets rid of a lot of the social issues discussed above. The kids get more one on one time with the teacher and I have known several kids who would have likely dropped out had it not been for these alternative schools. My school district also opened up a Medical Arts High School a couple of years ago and they have at least one Technical High School... Of course the medical arts one is for those kids who plan on becomming doctors, nurses, EMT's, whatever in the medical field. I think that if all school districts were able to offer smaller schools that cater to those kids who won't do well in a regular school or those that obviously are more driven than the average high schooler, that it might help with the problem. However, I know that funding for these things can be sparse. I am fortuante to live in a community where anytime a school bond is up for vote, it passes. Just my 2 cents worth. :) What Can We Do About The Surge In School Killings? Part Two - Blog Entry06 Oct 2006 10:39 AM I really enjoyed your articles. I have read alot on this issue recently and the msnbc website has all sorts of articles on it. The stance they are taking on metal detectors is that it would little to no good. Someone with a gun who is insistant on getting into the school, isn't going to let a little beep get in his way. They used a real life school shooting to back up their point. Aparantly, a kid who went to a school with metal detectors and a guard, walked in, shot the guard, walked right past the metal detector and kept on shooting. Their opinion, and I have to agree, is that parents, teachers and students need to be on alert and report anything that seems suspicious. As with this kid in your last article. I do NOT think the school was too harsh on him. Yes, high school is hard, and yes, often kids get picked on, and yes, that causes anger, will that anger always turn to violence? no, but it makes sense to err on the side of caution and like you said, perhaps alerting his parents/teachers to the situation will get him the help that he needs. |
