My mother in-law does foster care for handicapped children and she has had a few with FAS. It truely is sad that mothers just can't give up that one thing for the health of their child. I have even heard (or read) people saying that it is okay to have a glass of wine several times a week durring your third trimester. To me, that is playing with fire. Women who make comments like these obviously have never seen the effects it can have on a life. What is PMI--Private Mortgage Insurance? - Blog Entry20 Sep 2006 12:55 PM Thank you, that would be wonderful. ADHD: To Medicate or not to Medicate--That is the Question - Blog Entry20 Sep 2006 09:49 AM I think that is wise counsel. Open, yet guarded. My niece is a complete nightmare when she is not on her meds. The medication truely can transform lives. Of course there are risks, there are risks with most medications we take. What we need to ask ourselves is if the medication is really working and if the child really needs it at all. I have a son who just bounces off of the walls at home and often I think he is ADHD, however, this has yet to really interfere with his social life and his school work, so for now, I will let it be. Another option is to talk to your doctor about Strattera, which is a non-stimulant and not a controlled substance and although it doesn't work for everyone, it has worked really well for my brother. What is PMI--Private Mortgage Insurance? - Blog Entry19 Sep 2006 01:05 PM This is interesting. We pay PMI and we owe $110,000 on a house that is worth about $200,000. I called my mortgage lender (Wells Fargo) and asked what I had to do to get the PMI dropped. They told me that because my house was on an FHA loan, I had to wait for 5 years after I got the loan (it has only been two) before I could apply to have it dropped. I was so FRUSTRATED! My husband and I have talked about refinancing with a conventional loan, but are afraid that the interest rate will go up (we are at 5.78%). Any words of wisdom for me? (Let me clarify that when we bought our house, we had already been living in it as a rent to own type of deal. We had settled on the price to buy it for in 2002 when we moved in. Property values have drastically increased this last year which is why we have so much equity when we only got our mortgage 2 years ago). 'One Day' For a Good Cause - Blog Entry16 Sep 2006 05:18 PM Although I always think it is great when celebrities try to do something good with their money, I often wonder when statements like the one above, "She was honored with the same award in 2004 for her humanitarian efforts in raising money for the hospital." if they actually donate much of their own money. It seems like celebrities are always out saying donate, donate, but are they themselves donating anything substantial? I watched an interview with Rosie O' Donnel several years ago in which they asked why she turned down doing the celebrity telethon for the victims families of 9/11 (remember that one?). She got a lot of flack for saying no, and her reasoning was very interesting to me. She said that here, they had all of these celebrities who could easily afford to donate one million dollars, it would be a non-issue to most who attended, and she told the producers that she would be happy to do it, if they would charge a minimum $1,000,000 cover charge to all celebrities participating (all proceeds going to the victims families of 9/11 of course).... well there were several that didn't want to, and yet they have the gal to get on tv and ask regular middle class americans to sacrifice (yes sacrifice for many of us) $100 or so to help these victims. It just seems like a double standard.... wow, I have really rambled. That is my 2 cents worth. "Dog" Out Of Jail, But On Tight Leash - Blog Entry16 Sep 2006 12:53 PM Thanks Michele, it does make a little more sense, but still seems really stupid to me. "Dog" Out Of Jail, But On Tight Leash - Blog Entry16 Sep 2006 11:14 AM Okay, so this story really makes no sense. 3 years ago, this guy apprehended a convicted rapist in Mexico (who I read on another site is serving a 124 year sentence now), then "skipped bail" in Mexico because bounty hunting in illegal, and they are just now arresting him in Hawaii??? Perhaps my confusion doesn't make much sense, but it isn't like "Dog" and his cohorts were hiding somewhere, they could have been arrested at any time. Why now? and for heaven's sake, why at all when a convicted rapist is off the streets and behind bars because of him. I am not an avid Dog the Bounty Hunter viewer (although I have watched it occasionally with my husband when there was nothing better on), but this whole thing just seems backwards.
