Basket Full of Fun

Easter is right around the corner and there is no shortage of egg, chick and bunny-shaped paraphernalia available to cram into your loved ones’ baskets.  But what if you don’t want to stick with the traditional basket or fillers this year?

For those looking to hop down Bunny Trail with a few unique Easter or spring-themed treats, consider the following:

Teacup:  Personalize plain, inexpensive teacups for your family members and friends and fill them with foil-covered chocolate Easter eggs.  Next, nestle a few artificial flowers inside, and then wrap the entire cup in organza or tulle.

Bakery Boxes:  Plain, cardboard bakery boxes are an affordable alternative to baskets.  What’s more, they offer a blank canvas for your creativity.  You can decorate the box with stamps, stickers, pastel markers, sequins, glitter, or gems.  Then, you can fill them with Easter cupcakes, fresh hot cross buns, scones, or mini carrot cakes.

Bucket:  If your Easter egg hunt is taking place at the beach, forgo the baskets for brightly colored sand buckets.  Otherwise, you can use kid-sized garden pails and fill them with candy, flower-shaped hair clips, seed packets and small trowels, stuffed animals and flower-shaped cookies-on-a-stick.

The aforementioned ideas can also be used as prizes for untraditional egg hunts.  After all, if you are crafting untraditional “baskets” it only makes sense to spice up the hunt as well.  For example, rather than have kids go wild hunting for random eggs in your front yard, consider assigning a specific color of egg to each child. This way, older kids won’t snatch up every egg before the younger ones get a chance to find anything.

Another idea is to place a piece of paper with a number from one to five in colored plastic eggs, and then hide them along with eggs with candy inside.  Next, tell the group of hunters that they are allowed to collect a certain number of eggs (you decide on the exact amount).  The child who has the highest number of points at the end of the hunt wins a special prize “basket”.
