Cleaning Can Be Hazardous to Your Health

If you don't want your obituary to read "Died While Cleaning House," keep these cautions in mind as you scrub.

  1. Check the label of any cleanser you use.  If it contains the word caustic, the substance can burn your skin.  Be sure to wear rubber gloves when handling such substance.
  2. When using harsh cleaners, make sure your work area is well-ventilated and avoid gas or flames of any kind.
  3. Be sure to store that indispensable supply of vinegar in glass containers only.  When vinegar comes in contact with lead or copper, it can create a deadly poison.
  4. Never mix chlorine bleach with toilet bowl cleaners or ammonia.  When combined, these chemicals can create chlorine gas-a potentially lethal substance.
  5. One you are through using cleaners, be sure to seal the containers tight and store them in a well-vantilated space.  Make sure the space you choose is well out of reach of children.
