Create costumes from your closet

Make an easy, last-minute outfit for your son or daughter with clothes and supplies you already have.

For Boys:

  • Dress your son as a nerd.   Start with a pair of dress pants and hike them up with a belt.  Mismatch his clothes:  Try a plaid shirt and a striped tie.  Slick his hair down with pomade.   Put pens and a small calculator in his shirt pocket.
  • Put together a hobo costume.   Put your son in Dad's rattiest shirt and pants (roll up and pin the cuffs).  Smudge brown eye shadow on his face to fake dirt spots.  Wrap a bandana around the bristles of a broom to make the sack that goes over a hobo's shoulder; fill out the sack with balled-up newspaper.

For Girls:

  • Transform your daughter into a gypsy.  Dress her in a peasant-style top and one of her ankle-length skirts.  Tie a scarf around her head and let her wear beads, bangles and hoop earrings.  Apply eyeliner, lipstick and blush.
  • Have her go as a gymnast.  Pair a one-piece bathing suit with a jogging suit.  Put her hair in a ponytail or braid.  Apply glitter to her eyelids and cheeks so she'll look ready for competition.

This is a good way to save money and your children will still be dressed up for Halloween.
