Entice your nose Just a tiny whiff if fresh-backed cookies can mentally whisk you right back into your grandmother's lap. Scent can help unlock vivid memories because the nerves that allow you to smell are in the same part of the brain that controls emotions. Let Lavendar lull you. Lavendar has strong calming effects and is a natural remedy for restless sleepers. (It won't work if you don't like the smell though.) Resarch has found that smelling lavender can lead to longer, deeper sleep, so take a lavendar lotion before bed. Then dab a few drops of levendar oil on your pillow. Just don't overuse it or you may lessen its postive effects. Rev up with herbs. The aromas of cutrus, rosemary, jasmine and mint promote heighted alertness when inhaled. A study done at Wheeling Jesuit University, in West Virginia, found that the scent of pepperment helps keep drivers alert--so don't dismiss those dangling deodorizers. Perk up your morning routine with a citrus body wash. Or keep a pot of rosemary or jasmine on your desk to sniff when you're dragging. Sniff away daily stress. Keep a bowl of green apples handy and take a quick whiff whenever you're feeling overwhelmed or worried. Some research suggests that the scent of green apples may help reduce anxiety.
