27 Aug 2006 07:10 PM Great Cleaners from the Kitchen Cupboard Who needs fancy cleaners? You sure don't if you happen to have a few baking basics on hand. You can battle a thoroughly messy kitchen without spending a dime. Here's all you need.
- Baking soda. This is one of the most versatile cleaners and deodorizers you can find. Sprinkle it on countertops to scour them clean, or use it on a damp sponge to make a gentle scrubbbing agent. You also can pour it down the drain with an equal amount of vinegar to unclog the pipes.
- Club soda. Pour it on stains that crop up on cloth napkins, or use it to soak dish towels. Those bubbles also will help shine stainless steel sinks and utensils.
- Salt. It works really well as a mild scouring agent, and it's a terrific odor eater, too. If your hands smell of garlic or fish, rub a little dry salt on your fingers to lift the odor right out. Sprinkle salt on warm spills in the oven, them wipe them away when cool. Add a little vinegar to salt to clean copper.
- Lemon. The mild acid in this fruit makes a great cleaner, and that fresh scent makes it a great deodorizer. Sprinkle salt on lemon wedge and use it to scrub and shine your sink. Squeeze the wedge with your fingers to get rid of fish or onion odors on your hands. When you're done, grind the wedge in your garbage disposal to clean the blades.
- Cream of tarter. Mix this mild acid with some boiling water, and you have a cleanser that will take some stains out fo aluminum pans.
