Children's Toys?

Many of the toys developed and sold on today's market target a specific age range, either for safety or cognitive value. As the child develops through each stage of life, the toy appropriate for the developmental stage changes. I am particularly interested in knowing what toys are most appealing to a newborn child (until about 5 months).

Immunizations

With all of the recent speculation surrounding the topic of immunizations, I am curious to find out the parent's opinion on whether or not they are beneficial for your child. Immunizations are said to be one of the most effective developments that have been successful in sustaining the lives of children within the past century.

Stranger Wariness

As we all know, babies all have very distinct personalities and temperaments. However, have you noticed that regardless of how shy or outgoing a child is, they will still reach a point when they are hesitant to interact with strangers? Once they reach about a year old, they are very wary about approaching or interacting with someone other than a very close caregiver.

Valuing Friendships

At what age did your child first begin to develop friendships with other children? Obviously as young children they have kids with whom they interact or play with, but when did they truly begin to develop and understand friendship? As I was reading a developmental textbook, I read that children value close, meaningful friendships, rather than wide range acceptance by peers.

Modeling

According to the social learning theory, an important aspect of learning is modeling. Modeling is the act by which someone (usually the child), observes another's behavior, then imitates it. Have you noticed your child modeling any of your behaviors? At what age did they begin doing this? What behaviors did the choose to model?

Object Permanence

Have you ever heard the saying "Out of Sight, Out of Mind"? For young children, this is more than a mere saying. According to Jean Piaget, before the age of about 8 months, children are unable to comprehend that an object or person are still in existence when they can no longer be seen, heard, etc. This concept is referred to as object permanence.

Nature vs. Nurture?

As we all know, a child's development is neither entirely based on genetics or on environmental surroundings and circumstances.

Potty Training?

How do you know when your child is ready to be potty trained? I think that most kids begin potty training in the 2-3 range, but how can you tell when the time is right for your kid? Then, when you do decide that it's time, how do you go about actually potty training them? Do you use a rewards system?

How do you Discipline a Child?

How do you discipline a 2/3 year old, as opposed to a 9/10 year old? Obviously the cognitive stage of development plays a major role in the discipline style, but what should you actually do depending on the age of your child? If you have children, what has worked for you? Have you had to change your "style" as your child has grown?

Public vs. Private School?

What are your views on public vs. private school? I do not have children but within the next 5-10 years would like to. I was curious what thoughts there were regarding public and private school? While growing up, I attended a new public school in my town.
