How do you Discipline a Child?

How do you discipline a 2/3 year old, as opposed to a 9/10 year old? Obviously the cognitive stage of development plays a major role in the discipline style, but what should you actually do depending on the age of your child? If you have children, what has worked for you? Have you had to change your "style" as your child has grown?
