Public vs. Private School?

What are your views on public vs. private school? I do not have children but within the next 5-10 years would like to. I was curious what thoughts there were regarding public and private school? While growing up, I attended a new public school in my town. At the time, it seemed relatively innocent (probably because it was originally populated with freshmen and sophomores), however, as it became populated with all grade levels, the problems have become much more prevalent and serious. Are the environments in private schools much different than those in public schools? Is it worth the money and the time (to travel to take them to school every day), or is there no real difference between the two?
