10 Reasons I Hate Summer Exercise

Summer time, summer time, sum-sum-summer time! It’s that time of the year again, granted – I’ve seen it be a 100 degrees in May, so this May it hasn’t been too bad. But the heat is coming and the heat is hot and it blisters and it is miserable weather. I know there are a lot of perks to summer, but I think I outgrew most of those when I turned 18 and didn’t get summer vacation anymore. Frankly, if I got 12 weeks off, I’d be happier about the hotter, brutal weather, but then I don’t. So for fun, and because I can, here are my 10 reasons I hate summer exercise.

  • Yes, it’s hot. That’s a really good reason to not like it. You can exercise early (which works for me) or you can exercise late (which doesn’t), but exercising in the middle of the day invites disaster
  • Sports are the big summer time outdoor activity and I’ve never been a fan of sports in general. I do like baseball, though, but more to watch than to actually do. I don’t get to ride horses anymore so that’s another summer activity out the window
  • Flies. ‘nuff said. I hate flies.
  • Sweat. Sweat. Did I mention sweat? I know sweating is a good sign of a workout. That part I don’t mind. I’m just not a big fan of being drenched in sweat because I happen to be standing outside
  • Mosquitoes. Seriously, doesn’t need an explanation.
  • Sun burns. Suntans. Sun screen. It’s all a part of the summer ritual now, but sun screen makes sweat oily, sun burns hurt and in the long run, sun tans aren’t that good for you
  • Bikes – Texas in the summertime – everyone is on a bike and whether you’re out there dripping sweat with them or trying to drive around them, you can’t avoid them
  • Weeds. Weeds. Weeds. Viney grass attacks my garden on a regular basis throughout the summer creating back breaking work to get them out
  • My Inner Bikini Bimbo – I haven’t looked good in a bikini since I was about 25 years old. That doesn’t mean I don’t want to and she gets really loud and obnoxious in the summer
  • Summer vacation – I miss it. I miss the feeling of freedom when you get out of school for the summer whether you get a summer job or not. There’s something really liberating about those weeks off and I don’t get that anymore

What do you hate about summer?
