2006 Best Boy Toys

The winner of the Toy Industry Association’s ward for the Best Boy Toy went to an R/C toy called the Shell Shocker. Read on for a description of the toy and the other best boy toy nominees.

Shell Shocker
Cost: $80-100
Manufacturer: Tyco
This is a unique R/C toy that is a monster that morphs from a ball to a beast. It is pretty large so it needs a lot of space to maneuver in. Also watch out for the tail since it can pack quite a wallop. It requires a special battery, which costs an additional $30. Be sure you get the right battery pack. Some parents complained that the gears stripped easily, so if you have a child that is rough on toys you might want to consider something different.

Air Hogs Zero Gravity
Cost: $70-80
Manufacturer: Tyco
Air Hogs are a line of remote controlled cars that can virtually run anywhere. With this vehicle your child can run up the walls, across the ceiling, and back down again. The concept sounds really cool, but the vehicle did not have good reviews on Amazon. Although the car does not leave marks on the wall, it is hard to control. It only works on completely smooth surfaces. If your walls are heavily textured or you have lots of carpeted floors it will not work.

Fly Wheels
Cost: $6-20
Manufacturer: JAKKS Pacific
Fly Wheels are unique in that instead of racing cars you only race wheels. To race you pull the ripcord on the Fly Wheels launcher and send the wheels flying. The wheels can achieve speeds up to 300 mph high into the air.

Star Wars Darth Vader Voice Changer
Cost: $50
Manufacturer: JAKKS Pacific
What boy wouldn’t want to sound like Darth Vader? I don’t know any. Which is why the Toy Association believes this toy will be popular. The mask actually electronically changes a child’s voice so they sound like Darth Vader when talking and breathing.

Star Wars Revenge of the Sith Ultimate Lightsaber Kit
Cost: $25-35
Manufacturer: JAKKS Pacific
Star Wars is obviously popular this year and boys will love pretending to be their favorite hero while battling with this lightsaber. The kit comes with multiple blades and colors so your child can design their own sword. If you don’t want to buy the whole kit you can get a lightsaber for as little as $9.
