One of the great principals of frugal living is making things last long and getting by with less. Did you know that there are so many ways to do this with bathroom products? Most of the time, we use much more than is required to get the job done. Manufacturers encourage this with super-sized products (you use more when you have more), over-large holes for product to ooze out, etc.
Even if you are very conscious of using the right amount of product, chances are that your family is not. While a big part of the frugal lifestyle is in training (and begging and pleading), there are actually some little secrets that will make it extremely easy to use less and save more on bathroom products.
Here are three top tips for savings.
Place a rubber band on the pump handle for the liquid or foam soap dispenser. This will make it impossible to push the pump down all the way, essentially stopping it in its tracks. Less soap will be dispensed, which is a good thing. After all, most of the time we wash hands, we spend the first few seconds rinsing off the extra glob of soap–money right down the drain. This little tip can make your soap last at least twice as long.
Cut your facial cleansing cloths in half. I love those facial cleansing cloths that come in the nifty square boxes. They are great for the shower or a quick facial cleansing any time of day. But they aren’t cheap. By cutting the cloths in half with a clean pair of scissors before placing the refill in the box, you’ve effectively doubled your cleansing cloths. I guarantee that half of a cloth is plenty to wash your face.
For shaving cream in the shower, try soaping up both legs with one application of cream, rather lathering and shaving one leg before doing the next. You won’t waste the extra shaving cream down the drain. A little change of habit that can stretch your product to double its use.
