Five Lessons from Children’s Songs

I thought today I would take a break from my series over the evidence we have for the existence of God to write on a little lighter subject. This past week my congregation has been conducting a Family Bible School. While we all sang the children’s songs before class was held, I started thinking about how simply these children’s songs teach important lessons not only for children, but for us as well. I am honestly not 100% on the titles of these songs – the titles I have listed here are the names I have known these songs by all my life.

Oh, Be Careful. This song reminds us to be careful what our ears hear, eyes see, and hands do for one very important reason: God is looking down on us. In Jeremiah 23:23-24 the Bible states: “”Am I a God at hand, declares the LORD, and not a God afar off? Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the LORD. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the LORD.”

The B.I.B.L.E. This song states the importance of standing upon and obeying God’s Word.

This Little Light of Mine. In Matthew 5:14-16 the Bible states: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” This song reminds us to be the light of the world and to share it with the world.

Jesus Loves Me. It is a simple song, right? Yet, I think in hustle of everyday life we can easily forget this very important principal, central to Christianity.

Seek Ye First. The ultimate goal of life should be to seek the kingdom of the Lord by obeying the Lord and sharing His Word with others.
