A Blog of Sharing

I’ve been blogging here at Families.com for a while now and I’ve been enjoying it quite a bit. It took a while for me to get my own personal blog going (of things mostly unrelated to our son) but I finally got it up and running a while ago. It became a resource for another side of myself (primarily the artist/academic side) and I really enjoyed what I was able to do with it. Recently I helped one of my professors set up his own blog site for the purpose of answering questions about his particular field and it has been a wonderful success and joy to him as well. The basic point I’m trying to make here is that blogging is an important activity. It allows people to communicate with one another over long distances in order to share things: stories, ideas, problems, etc. While blogging is sometimes decried in more traditional outlets for information (classrooms, radio, television, etc.) as something that only teenagers and 40 year old virgin‘s do, blogging is an important medium for sharing information.

On Families.com I share experiences and thoughts with all of you (and you, in turn, share things with me). We learn from each other. On my blog I share things with other people and they also share with me. I shared my knowledge of blogging platforms with my teacher and he now shares his knowledge with the internet. Sure, it isn’t as in depth as the sharing I get by attending class for semesters at a time with him, but he is freely sharing his knowledge of a subject nonetheless. Last time I wrote about why giving makes sense. Blogs are some form of proof of that concept. You can learn a lot from a blog. Students and teachers, don’t confine yourself to information you find in books. Stretch out and look in blogs. Even for those of you that decry the blog I’m sure you can find a prominent person in your field who keeps a blog. The information they share will not be found in any book because blogs are quite up to date. This is also a roundabout way of encouraging you to blog. Share what you know. That’s how knowledge works.
