A breath of fresh air

Today I was feeling especially down. I don’t know why exactly. It could have been the weather, it could have been coming down from the rush of the holidays, it could have been the fact that my husband has been out of town, or it could have been because we’re coming down to the end of a very long three week vacation from school. Whatever the reason, I was blue, I admit it, and completely unmotivated.

I decided that today would be my day to do nothing, but the longer I did nothing, the worse I felt. I thought I would try curling up in a blanket and watch a movie, and of course it was a sad one, so by the time that was over, I thought I might as well call it a day. But, it was only 1:00 and the kids had entertained themselves for as long as they could.

I got up; looked around the house for something to do, secretly making a promise to myself that tomorrow I would take the kids to the park. Just making the promise alleviated some of the guilt I was starting to carry with me.

My baby decided she wanted to take a walk, and while I really didn’t feel like going, I did. By the time we got back home I felt like a whole new person. Just being outside for a short period of time rejuvenated me. I ended up planning my daughter’s birthday party and actually did some shopping for it.

I realized today that even when I am feeling really tired or lacking energy, that getting outside and breathing in fresh air makes me feel that much better, which in turn makes me a better, more productive mom.

What helps you when you’re feeling down or unmotivated? What gets you going?
