A Day at the Beach–Part 2

My previous blog focused on what to bring to the beach. If you have kids, you know that a trip to the beach requires bringing more than just a swimsuit and sunblock. So, now that you know what to bring, we can tackle the question: “How am I supposed to schlep these supplies from the car to the sand?” Here are a few ideas.

Deluxe Wonder Wheels.” This is a product I found in a baby supply catalog, but you can get a similar one at any discount store. It is an all-terrain cart. It has four wheels; the front two swivel and maneuver easily over sand, grass and pavement. The cart has two handles on either side, giving you the option of pushing or pulling it. This particular version also includes a large mesh bag (perfect for loose items like sand toys and towels) that hangs over an anchored bottom (perfect for a large cooler). It holds up to 100 pounds and folds compactly to store easily in your vehicle. My aunt owns one and offers this warning: “Put your pride aside if you are thinking of buying one.” She has five children (three of them teenagers) who tease her incessantly about her cart, noting that she looks like a “bag lady” pushing it around. She says all the teasing in the world won’t convince her to give up the convenience the cart provides.

Laundry Baskets. This affordable means of toting toys, towels, sandals and much more can be seen at beaches around the country. Laundry baskets are sturdy, durable and give kids easy access to their beach gear. In addition, they now come in a variety of vibrant colors.

Mesh Totes. I am a big fan of mesh bags. I use them for wet clothes, toys and scuba gear. Since they are so well ventilated, wet items air-dry faster. The bags also come in a variety of sizes. I have one large enough to accommodate all of my daughter’s beach toys, including her medium sized inflated beach ball. My bag also has padded shoulder straps and is machine washable.

Over the years these items have aided me in getting all of our gear to and from the beach without feeling too much like a pack mule. Here’s hoping they can help you too.
