It has been several years since I wrote my “Day In the Life” post, and to continue giving you a peek into what it looks like to homeschool, I thought it was definitely time for an update.
With two teens, my schedule looks nothing like when I started homeschooling.
Our week is centered around Tuesday and Thursdays.
On Tuesday my kids go to Artios Academy from 8am until 7pm where they do Art, Drama, Chorus, photography, Worldview (religious instruction), Literature, screen writing, piano, and things of that nature. My son’s focus (major) in this program is Tech/film. My daughter’s is musical theater.
On Thursday Afternoon and some Saturdays we go back for evening drama club which can last 4 or 5 hours. Needless to say, they put on some amazing productions.
Next in order of importance is Academics: On Monday, Wednesday, Thursday Mornings, and Friday Mornings we focus on on the 3R’s (Reading, wRiting, and aRithmetic) and and the 3 S’s (Science, Social Studies, and Spanish) that are not already covered on Tuesday.
My son wakes up with the Dogs and gets his math done before anyone else wakes up. He is working on Algebra 2. Next he works on whatever subject he is studying for in his next CLEP exam. So far this year he has passed the Analyzing Lit CLEP, and right now he is working on SAT Prep which he will take this Saturday. After that it is on to the History 2 and Physics (he likes to take one class per quarter). He ends his day with an hour of Rosetta Stone Spanish. He is usually done by 3.
My daughter sleeps later, until 10-ish. She also starts with math, and follows with science and social studies. She is using Hippocampus.org for these subjects. She ends her day with Spanish. Her Spanish Program of Choice is Mi Vida Loca Spanish.
For both kids, I encourage continued reading and extra study on the weekends.
As teenagers, both of my kids are self directed and self sufficient. I get my writing done when they are working, but I am “on call” as they my holler my name at any moment to help them work through a problem or concept. We break for Dinner prep around 4 and have dinner around 6. After Dinner, they practice Piano and watch TV. (They also stop working during the day to play piano when they get frustrated) I get back to my writing after dinner as well. These are the hours when I cannot be disturbed, so I get most of my work done during this time and I go to bed around Midnight. The kids nod off between 10 and 12.
