It happens to me all the time. In fact, it just happened again yesterday. I was shopping online for an affordable airline ticket. I found a decent price, but I didn’t book. Rather, I decided to wait and look around for a better deal.
It’s a game we all play from time to time. We hold off on purchasing a plane ticket hoping that the price will drop, then as it often turns out the deals end up taking off—without us. If this scenario sounds a bit too familiar you may be happy to know that it doesn’t have to be this way.
I recently discovered a new service that promises to protect consumers from suffering from buyers’ remorse– or worse getting burned by unexpected fare changes. Enter Farecast.com. It’s a travel search engine that doesn’t just hunt for flights and prices it also looks at historical data and predicts whether the lowest price quoted will rise, hold steady or fall over the next week.
Typically, an airline or travel website (the majority of them anyway) will offer price guarantees for 24 hours. Farecast.com takes the guarantee a step further with a program called “Fareguard.” For a $10 fee the website will guarantee you the lowest price listed for seven days. During that time the company promises to send you emails tracking ticket prices. If the fare drops during the seven-day period, you will be notified and can take advantage of the lower fare. If the fare increases, you’ll be notified of that as well. At the end of the seven-day period if the lowest fare offered by any airline is higher than the fare you locked in on “Fareguard,” the company will pay you the difference from the lowest fare.
In my opinion “Fareguard” pays off if you’re traveling with a group. After all, when you are shelling out thousands of dollars to fly a family of six there’s a lot at stake. Just remember “Fareguard” is not insurance, and won’t protect you from fees assessed by changes you make to your flights.
