A Personal Relationship with Heavenly Father

Often I get so caught up in the details of living life from day to day that I forget how important my own personal relationship with Heavenly Father is. It’s all very well and good to keep the commandments, but our spiritual growth needs to take another step, one of seeking every day to strengthen that relationship and nurture it.

I think we find it easy to lump the Godhead all into one, but I would like to suggest that as we believe that the Godhead is comprised of three separate beings, that we increase our testimony of and relationships with each of the three as individuals. Each brings a different piece to the overarching role of the Godhead, and while they work as a unit, they are indeed separate and we should get to know them as such.

Our Heavenly Father is the Personage to whom we pray. He is the one who is ultimately in charge of granting blessings and guiding the course of our lives. He is the one who must step back and watch while we exercise our free agency.

He is literally the Father of our spirits, and as such, loves us just as our own earthly parents love us, and as we love our own children. However, because He is God, He has an infinite capacity for love and His feelings go deeper than we can fathom.

We can and should approach Him like we would a father. He is the fount of all wisdom and we can turn to Him for advice. When we pray, it is appropriate for us to ask for help in coming to know Him better. While we can learn much about the Savior from reading the New Testament, the only real way to come to know Heavenly Father is through prayer. The more we sincerely pray to Him and earnestly listen to the answers, the more we can come to know Him.

Not only is it important to come to know our Heavenly Father, it is absolutely crucial. We must each develop our own testimonies – we cannot rely on borrowed light. We need this relationship in order to see us through the dark times we face.

He will hold nothing back from us if we approach Him in sincerity and obey the things He asks us to do. He will be by our side every minute if we desire it and appreciate it sufficiently. He is our Father, and He wants nothing more than to be close to us. What a blessing that is.
