A Reputable Breeder

There are so many ways to get a dog these days. You can go into a pet store (I don’t recommend this), you can order one off the internet, go to a shelter or buy from a breeder.

If you choose to go to a breeder there are a few things you should know. Not all breeders are reputable breeders.

A reputable breeder does not breed to make a profit.
A reputable breeder will require that you spay or neuter any “pet quality” dogs
A reputable breeder will never advertise in the local newspaper.
A reputable breeder does not sell his or her dogs to pet stores.
A reputable breeder shows his or her dogs in national shows.
A reputable breeder will interview you as if this were a job. Expect to be asked questions about your home environment, your family and reasons for wanting a dog.puppies
A reputable breeder does not breed several dog breeds. In my opinion a reputable breeder will only breed one dog breed; but some people say up to two, but no more.
A reputable breeder will draw up a contract and offer a guarantee. All contracts differ, but basically they usually cover health and temperament guarantees, responsibilities of the breeder and buyer. Also most will state that they will take the dog back if it isn’t satisfactory or if things don’t work out. They usually would rather have the dog back than to have you place it in a shelter.
A reputable breeder will have references.

Avoid breeders who:
Don’t screen their buyers
Sell their puppies to pet shops.
Breed to make extra cash.
Have no idea what genetic testing is.
Cannot answer basic questions about the breed in general. (Health, temperament, etc.)
Please keep in mind that AKC registration does not guarantee proper breeding conditions, health, quality or claims to lineage.
