A Review of Bhangra Aerobics

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I was excited about a new fitness trend, Bollywood-style aerobics. In my enthusiasm for East Indian culture, I hadn’t really considered the whole aerobics thing. You see, it has never been my forte. The reason? I am incredibly uncoordinated and have no sense of rhythm.

I am one of those “wanna be’s,” where I would love to be able to shake my stuff and look good doing it. But alas, I was not gifted with any musical talents and that includes dance.

So here was my first problem with “Bhangra Aerobics.” There is absolutely no instruction given, the “instructor” just sort of jumps right into it. Now I suppose if you have some idea of bhangra dance that works for you. But as a German American it doesn’t for me. I know nothing about bhangra dance.

So following along…especially for one who has no sense of rhythm and is greatly lacking in the coordination gene…well, that doesn’t work so well. What is worse is that in many shots you are only seeing the instructor’s head so you have no idea what she is doing with her arms and legs.

I suppose if you did the workout enough times you would eventually catch on but I’m still not sold on the ability to really get the gist of her routine because she never explains the moves.

I was also a little disappointed in the music. It wasn’t as upbeat as I guess I was expecting. After doing some additional research into the DVD, yes, after I had already purchased it, I discovered that others who had invested in this DVD were also disappointed in the music.

I can’t fail to mention the background “dancers” who looked about as unprofessional as I suppose I did. It just didn’t jive together and it looked more like they were along for the ride. They didn’t seem engaged.

So needless to say I wouldn’t really recommend this video. I might have wasted $13 but I learned a lesson. Read the reviews before I purchase the next one.
