A Single Parent on the Job—Part Three—Benefits and Perks

As single parents, we really have to consider the “whole package” when it comes to our employment. This doesn’t just mean monetary compensation or traditional benefits either. As the sole support for our families, we have to make sure all our bases are covered, but we also have to look at the other benefits that might come with a specific job or career choice in choosing what is best for ourselves and our families.

Traditional benefits include things like insurance (health, dental, life, disability) and vacation and sick time, retirement benefits, etc. BUT, there are other benefits and perks that can make a difference to a single parent too. I talked about flexible work hours earlier today, but you might also think about things like employee discounts, memberships to health or community organizations, on-site day care, opportunities for travel, bonuses, and advances, etc. Instead of just looking at the hourly wage or the yearly salary—it can be doubly important for a single parent to look at all the opportunities or disadvantages to a particular job and really weigh out how his or her family will be affected by the employment.

Keep in mind that it may take some negotiation to get what you need or want. While some employers are rather rigid in what is offered, you might be able to find more flexible employers who will be a better fit for your single parent lifestyle. Often, small businesses and nonprofit organizations have more flexibility and creativity (even though they might pay a lower wage) than larger, more established corporations, while the larger corporations have better “traditional” benefits such as insurance and retirement plans. As a single parent, you will need to have your own personal goals and plans and find a job that fits with those (instead of being able to mold yourself and your family into fitting a particular job.)
