A Typical Day

My day begins with my daughter’s sweet little voice coaxing me out of my sleepfulness. We spend a few minutes chatting, smiling, and often times even laughing. Then she expresses to me quite insistently that she wants to get out of bed. I take her into her and her brother’s room (where most often my son and husband are sleeping) to change her diaper. At this point my son usually stirs and after I change his sister I also change him. Once both kids have dry diapers and clean clothes, we head downstairs with my husband following close behind. Then I start our breakfast of eggs; either a large omelet or over medium eggs with bacon. My husband tends to browse boingboing or some similar website for the latest technology information. After eating breakfast together, I clear a space in the living room, get myself a full glass of water, lay out my yoga mat, and change into my workout attire. While I exercise (usually a fifty minute workout), my husband will entertain our son with books, basketball, or guitar/drum playing in the basement or a similar activity. Sometimes he just locks himself in the bathroom with his dissertation research. Our daughter is usually content sitting in her bouncy seat. Once I am done exercising I take a quick shower and make lunch at which time my husband leaves for work (after he eats of course). The kids and I chill for a bit nursing and sometimes reading stories or watching an episode of one of our favorite shows. Depending on the day, we run errands, play outside, or sometimes we even get a good nap. Later in the afternoon, while my son plays (which usually looks like tearing the house apart), and my daughter naps, I write or do my on-line tasks (recently it was filing our taxes). We have an easy dinner (I tend to only cook a full dinner when my husband is home). Then more books, drawing, and playing. On really stressful days we do a bath scented with essential lavender oil. We have a snack and watch another show to decompress my son usually falls asleep on the couch, at which point I carry him up to his bed (it is a full non toddler bed). Then I get myself and my daughter ready for bed and we go to sleep too. My husband will call when he is one his way home, usually I am asleep and I do not answer the phone. Depending on our son, my husband will climb into bed with me but if our son is or does cry at any point during the night my husband will sleep with him instead. That is a pretty typical day.
