Is it too early to make a New Year’s resolution?
As I look back at the scrapbooks I created in 2011, I’ve noticed that they lack color variations. I tend to use the same shades on different layouts. Whereas I am good at incorporating an array of embellishments, they tend to be in the same color family.
Obviously, if you are creating a layout with a theme, such as high school graduation, and you are using your child’s school colors as the focus, then it makes sense to stick with the same hues. However, if you are designing a layout celebrating New Year’s Eve, a holiday that features a kaleidoscope of different colors, then it pays to experiment.
While black and white are very popular color choices for New Year’s Eve scrapbook page designs, the stark color contrasts should really be reserved as a backdrop to bright accents or festive patterned paper with glitter, flocking or eye-popping confetti. Even if you don’t typically feature a ton of embellishments on your layouts, you could add touches of gold or silver to break up the black and white monotony. For example, if you have your heart set on using plain paper for a Christmas-themed scrapbook page, consider adding colorful flowers, sparkling rhinestone brads, or pretty patterned ribbons.
Another way to add color to your layouts is to add quotes penned in different colored ink. You could also accent your favorite sayings with colorful stickers or rub-ons. This is especially true for New Year’s Eve layouts. Some noteworthy quotes to spice up a holiday page include:
“An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.” –Bill Vaughan
“New Year’s Day is every man’s birthday.” –Charles Lamb
“Let us not drink to the past, but to the future.” –Anonymous
