An Environmentally Friendly Wedding

Our society in many cases is trying to become more environmentally aware. Several organizations are placing an emphasis on supporting and encouraging acts that are good for the environment. One very common phrase or logo that can be heard or seen in magazines is “go green”.

I have both heard this phrase on the radio and seen it in print. In most cases I think about not polluting, recycling, and planting trees. I had never thought about how a wedding may tie in with the logo until I came across a recent article stating that there were actually environmentally conscious wedding planners. The article discussed how some people preferred a “go green” wedding.

Of course, I thought. Why would an environmentally conscious person not carry his or her beliefs and values over into the wedding planning?

But then I began to ponder exactly how could you have a more environmentally friendly wedding? I thought about a typical wedding and then tried to imagine everything about it that might be bad for the environment. I then tried to think of how this could be changed. Below are some ideas that I came up with for having a more environmentally healthy wedding.

Most of you have heard that the typical throwing of rice is bad for the environment in that it is deadly to the birds that eat the rice after all of the people are gone. Most couples already change this hazard by having guests throw birdseed or blow bubbles instead.

Invitations are an area that perhaps couples are less conscious about when it comes to the environment. However invitations and wedding programs could easily be printed on recycled paper or perhaps not printed at all. How about emailing invitations and saving the lives of a few trees?

There are many ways in which you can have the “green” wedding of your dreams. Did you have a green wedding? Tell us about it!
