Do you have an annual or bi-annual bulk trash day? It is a great way to take a good look at all of that large stuff that is gathered around your home, sitting there and doing nothing.
Our town’s bulk trash pick up is coming up soon. Here they charge for bulk trash pick up, but that is probably because our garbage pick up is not included in our town taxes as it was in our old home. The fee is $15 for every three items.
What can go into bulk trash? Rules vary by town or region, but basically bulk trash consists of anything that won’t fit into a normal garbage can. Some towns include yard waste and “greenery,” while other towns do not. Hazardous waste can not be included with bulk trash, although items containing freon may be picked up, often for a fee. Our fee here is $50. Air conditioners, refrigerators and freezer may all contain freon.
One person’s trash is another person’s treasure. Very often on bulk trash days, you may see people cruising around in cars and trucks ready to spot and retrieve anything good. Some items that get put out include large plastic toys, furniture and items that can be sold as scrap metal.
Looking around, we found the following items that we could do without: A metal wheel barrow and a metal cart that were both left here by the people before us. These have been posted on freecycle and should be picked up by their new owners. An working air conditioner (still looking for a home) and the broken dishwasher that we replaced. During the year, we have given away many other items that might have wound up in bulk trash, such as a working, but old, dryer and some furniture.
