Anticipate Where You’ll Be when You Come Out of Your Funk

I know that sometimes we cannot see the forest for the trees and just getting up in the morning and getting in the shower is a huge accomplishment. But during those times when you are feeling low or depressed or not sure what you are trying to do—it can help to anticipate that you WILL come out of the funky space you are in and if you keep moving while you are feeling down, you’ll be better able to step back into your life when you are ready.

This can be an interesting life lesson to learn and one that has definitely benefitted me in my tenure as a single parent. We CAN keep doing the things we need to do, even when we are feeling low or badly or our lives have been turned upside down. This way, when we do come out of our funk or the hard times, we will not have wasted weeks or months or years. For example, let’s say that you find yourself in the midst of a divorce right after you have started back to school. Instead of giving in completely to the depression the feelings of insecurity and dropping out of school—you can keep going, if even if your heart isn’t in it. You may find that the classes become part of your healing, or they at least give you something to focus on as you re-build your life. Then, when you come out of the intense transition, you will have accomplished a great deal on the way to your goal. Even if you are not excited and you are not feeling passionate, you can still anticipate that you will want to have kept going when you finally pull out of the funk.

Keep moving, keep forcing yourself to get up and put one foot in front of the other. Try to imagine where you will want to be when you get back to feeling happier about your life. I know you may feel like you will NEVER feel happier about your life, but you will—and where will you want to be?
