Are You Ever Too Old to Get Married?

From time to time you hear about a couple in their 70s or 80s getting married and if you’re like me, it makes you smile. Sometimes these individuals were high school sweethearts who rediscovered each other centuries later. Other times these couples meet on a whim, fall and love and get a second chance at love and happiness in their later years. What could be more beautiful? It gives all of us something to look forward to, especially if you’re someone who lost your spouse to an early death. Many say they’re not looking to ever fall in love again, but like they say, “Never say never!”

Older couples seem to be a new trend in our culture today. Whether Viagra plays a part in giving hope to older couples connecting, is undetermined. Sex is often times not a primary reason for marriage anyway, especially with an older couple. Many times, it’s about companionship and finding a friend to spend the rest of your life with.

If you’re an older person who has found the spark of love with a new friend, or reconnected with a friend from the past, congratulations to you. You’re not alone. The question you must ask yourself now is, are you ready to take the plunge?

Questions that must be addressed and discussed include:

1. How will your older children take it?

2. Where will you live?

3. Do you need to set up a special will so your assets go to your children and not your new spouse, if you pass away?

These are three questions that usually emerge right away, and should be discussed openly with both sides of the family. No matter what conflicts might arise, remember, all decisions are yours. Your happiness is important, and you have every right to be married again, even if others might see it as strange or unnecessary.
