Are You In a Recession Proof Job?

If you listen or read anything about finances at all, no doubt you’re becoming intimately acquainted with the word recession. Whether you think we’re in one now, or whether we’re just on the brink of a recession–things are getting tougher financially. Gone are the days of economic boom and returning are the days of frugality and preparedness.

There is truly no such thing as a “recession proof” job. All jobs are subjected to the same woes of financial crisis however, experts say that some industries are indeed safer than others. However, what most industry experts are saying is that it is more important for you to personally recession proof yourself.

Jobs That Are Considered “Safe”

Among the top of jobs that are considered safe during a recession are jobs with Uncle Sam. Uncle Sam takes care of his own with outstanding benefits. Also some point out that as the baby boomer generation is retiring, there are more and more jobs to be had under the Uncle’s protective wing. Also, very few federal employees get laid off.

Anything in the health care industry is also considered relatively safe. As we are seeing more and more people live longer lives, there is a booming business to be had in pharmaceuticals, biomedicine and medical supplies (not to mention health care jobs.) There will always be a need for health care and on top of that, most health care jobs require specialized skills.

I was surprised to learn that sales are also considered relatively ‘safe’ during a recession. I suppose it all depends on what you’re selling, but there will always be a demand for certain products and so if you go into a job, where the demand will always be high, it is also one of your safer bets for a recession proof job.

The key is to think about what will be in demand regardless of the economy. Education, health sciences, the federal government, technology, etc. are all careers which are here to stay.

However, experts all seem to be saying the same thing. Regardless of whether or not you’re in a career that is deemed recession proof, there are ways of making yourself personally invaluable. Make sure to stop back soon for some tips on recession proofing yourself.
