Are You Unable to Fast?

There may be a time when you are not able to fast. This could be for medical reasons or because you are pregnant or nursing. You may also want to teach your younger children the concept of fasting, but feel that they are too young to go without food. When I can not physically fast (it has been four years due to pregnancy, nursing, pregnancy and nursing again), I try to have the spirit of fasting on fast day. Here are the five things that work for me.

1) I begin my fast period with a prayer, just as though I was really fasting. I express my concerns to my Heavenly Father. I explain that I am seeking guidance and state that I am going to cut back on what I eat during my prayer.

2) I cut back what I eat. I only eat what I need in order to survive. I also avoid desserts and other sweets. If you are having an eight year old fast you may consider only having him fast one meal or just cut out snacks. You should know how much your child can handle. You should not force fasting on your child either, though you should discuss the concept.

3) During the fast period I try to only focus on things that will bring me closer to the spirit. I spend time meditating, studying the scriptures and praying. If possible I attend the temple. This is similar to fasting since I am cutting out other forms of entertainment. It also allows me to focus my thoughts on the Lord.

4) I end my fast time with a prayer. I take time to give thanks for my blessings. I ask for guidance and speak about the feelings I had during my fast. I take time to listen while I am praying. This really allows the spirit to guide you.

5) I still give a fast offering, even though I did not fast. This helps me feel better about not being able to fast as well. I know that there are families that really do need the extra help that fast offerings provide.
